From the dawn of existence, humans have been looking for ways to trick their minds and bodies into performing better.

Smart Drugs is an interactive history of what people have been eating, drinking, smoking, and wearing over the last five centuries in order to hack their biological experience.

Researched and written in-house, the project gave us invaluable knowledge on the subjects of  electric eels, the Russian space program and Santa’s secret drug habit.

In order to convey the mind-altering effects of some of these drugs we turned to using javascript to manipulate and distort images based on mouse movement and scrolling. You can play with some of the examples below.

The effects of Peyote use a ripple distortion that increases in intensity as you advance through the section.

LSDs visual hallucinations are simulated by making a kaleidoscope out of one of the original sheets of blotter acid.
